PROSCAR (finasteride) is a newer controversial drug, issued by Merck, to hit the market. It is mostly prescribed to shrink tumors or for swollen prostrate treatment that occur in mens’ sex organs. Proscar is a man-made, synthetic steroid mixture that converts the naturally occuring hormone androgen testosterone in to a 5α-dihydrotestosterone (DHT). A limited 2008 study indicates that men taking the drug may reduce the likelihood of developing prostate cancer by 28-30%.

We are very finely tuned beings and while it is very beneficial to be able to shrink tumors or swollen prostates, it does not resolve the underlying cause. It also doesn’t answer the question about why the tumors or swelling is there in the first place. There are over 5,000 chemicals and hormones regulating the body constantly turning on and off little spigots adjusting for physical and emotional levels in your stress, rest, and emotional state of mind. To turn off, or convert one’s maleness into dormancy, falsely for even a short period of time, you are going to experience side effects.

As per the FDA, UK, Medical and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) and the Swedish, Medical Products Agency 2008, for those individuals who took 1 mg. tablets of Propecia, the side effects of finasteride included:
  • impotence
  • abnormal ejaculation (lower ejaculate volume)
  • abnormal sexual function
  • abnormal growth of male breast mass
  • erectile dysfunction
  • ejaculation disorder
  • testicular pain
  • irreversible sexual dysfunction (UK and Sweden)
  • indefinite erection dysfunction that persists after discontinuation of the drug (UK and Sweden)
  • male breast Cancer (UK)
  • retarded development in male babies (FDA)


As a result, you will not be permitted to give blood while taking Finasteride, or for a month after coming off of the drug. Sports organizations have also banned the drug as it can mask the use of steroids so that they are not detected.

If you do choose to use this drug for swollen prostate treatment or to shrink tumors, it might be best to limit its use and get off of it as soon as you are able given the side effects listed above. Also, it would also be a good idea to work with a competent Health Care Practitioner in order to discern the root cause of the swelling or tumefaction process to prevent any recurrence.

An Introduction to Swollen Prostate Symptoms

Suffering swollen prostate symptoms can be very concerning at any age.  Let’s start with a bit of education in basic anatomy first before we suggest how to fix it.  Your prostate is a walnut-sized gland that surrounds the little tubes called the urethra, just beneath the bladder where urine is stored.  It is located in front of the rectum and not in the testicles as some might think.

Prostate swelling is actually a normal process that takes place in men as they age naturally, however, complications with pain or swelling abnormally can create problems over time if not treated properly.  Sixty percent of men worldwide can suffer swollen prostate symptoms as the male hormones start to accumulate, building up in the gland.  Half of the male population over the age of fifty can suffer prostate issues leading to complications such as inhibited urination or sexual dysfunction including difficulty maintaining potent erections.

The symptoms often begin with an obstruction in the flow of urine and become a more pronounced “forked-stream” over time indicating that the prostate has swelled to the degree that it is inhibiting flow.  A bit like a stone blocking the flow of a rivulet or stream.  Over time the BHP (Benign Prostatic Hypertrophy) condition can lead to a BPO (Benign Prostatic Obstruction) which creates a constant urging to urinate.

Typical symptoms of a swollen prostate can include a thinning or dribbling stream of urine when voiding, pain during urination or sexual intercourse.  It is also common for the individual to be woken frequently through the night with a need to void due to the compression of the urethra as the prostate gland increases in size.  This can also lead to a stinging or burning sensation in the urethra indicative of a bacterial infection of the urethra and/or bladder.  Unfortunately, if not caught in time, more serious complications can result including discomfort in the hips or lower/upper back indicating that a harbored infection may have spread into the surrounding tissues or has moved up into the kidneys.  Long-term issues can even develop into prostate cancer, and so it is really important to seek appropriate medical care at the onset of symptoms.
